Borso d'Este Bible and a scroll tribute
One of the most remarkable illuminated bibles of the Renaissance is the Borso d'Este Bible. This masterpiece was exceptionally time-consuming to create and the very wealthy and influential could afford such a luxury. It was created between 1455 and 1461. It took six years to produce and a team of artisans was led by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi. Taddeo Crivelli was one of the best illuminators from the Ferrara school in Italy. France dei Russi was another brilliant Italian illuminator from Lombardy in Italy from the Ferrara school, which specialized in Italian Renaissance miniature painting and manuscript illumination. So, who comissioned the bible? The Borso d'Este Bible was ordered by Borso d'Este (1413–1471), the inaugural Duke of Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio. He ordered this extravagant manuscript to project the political authority and cultural magnificence of the House of Este. The total cost was 5,609 Marchesane lire. The estimation of cost in current money is around 2.4 million dollars for the human labor costs and it contains over $550,000 in gold leaf alone. With the availablility of gold nowhere near what it is today, this was an exceptional undertaking that is difficult to accurately convey.
The manuscript is currently preserved in the Biblioteca Estense di Modena (Ms. Lat. 422–423) and is 1,202 pages with illumination and text on both front and back of each page.
Its artistic style is a blend of late Gothic splendor with early Renaissance humanism and Northern Italian/Flemish stylistic elements. Its pages shine with gold leaf and feature remarkably detailed miniature scenes. The intricate and distinctive decorative lines feature volute plant motifs mixed with various animals, miniature scenes, the Este coat of arms, and symbols relating to their various enterprises.
